The new Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal

Zenmuse H3-3D The new Zenmuse H3-3D gimbal has started to appear in shops and online stores so here are some of the key differences between the H3-3D and the H3-2D that preceded it.

The Zenmuse H3-3D is a three axis, high performance gimbal designed for the stabilising the GoPro Hero3 and Hero3+ cameras as you fly your DJI Phantom 2 or Flame Wheel.  The light weight and plug ‘n’ play simplicity of this gimbal make it ideal for professional aerial photographers and keen amateurs alike.  The aluminum alloy construction make it strong but light.

It can be controlled using any of these flight control systems:

  • Quadcopter and Multirotor (currently supports)  – WooKong-M, NAZA-M V1, NAZA-M V2, Phantom 2 (use NAZA-M V2 PMU)
  • Helicopter (will support) – Ace One, WooKong-H, NAZA-H
  • NAZA-M LITE  – not supported

Zenmuse H3-3D mountedBoth the H3-2D and the H3-3D have tilt control, accuracy of 0.8 degrees, and support the GoPro Hero3 and Hero 3+, but the H3-3D has a 3-axis mechanical structure giving it pan as well as tilt and roll and a stronger motor shaft which altogether make it 11g heavier than the H3-2D.  Improvements to the H3-3D’s IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) provide more accurate and precise attitude information and position control.

DJI Phantom 2 owners who want to upgrade will need to install a mounting adapter to accommodate this new gimbal.  The latest Phantom 2s will not need the adapter as they are modified in readiness for it.  They have a larger aperture and one less screw hole on the underside of the quadcopter shell, whereas the earlier P2s have five screw holes and and a smaller aperture.
